Neighbourhood guide
Clifton
Large residential community south of the River Trent, combining a historic riverside village with one of the country's biggest post-war housing estates.
About Clifton
Clifton lies south of the River Trent and is one of the largest residential areas in Nottingham. It has two distinct sides: the historic Clifton Village, an old riverside settlement that was part of the Clifton family's estate for some 700 years, and the much larger housing estate built from the 1950s onwards, which was at one time among the biggest council estates in Europe.
Clifton Village retains its older character, with Clifton Grove's tree-lined walks along the Trent a long-standing local landmark. The wider estate is served by neighbourhood shopping parades, schools, and community facilities, and is well connected to the city centre by tram and bus, with the journey taking around twenty minutes.
Community life is central to Clifton. The library, the leisure centre, local pubs, and organisations such as Hope Nottingham — which provides food, advice, and practical support — are the gathering points that hold the area together.
With its strong family demographic and active community organisations, Clifton is well suited to family-focused content, local-service listings, and coverage of community events.
