Nottingham Council House & Old Market Square

The domed civic centrepiece of Nottingham, presiding over the largest market square in England.

Built in 1927-29 in grand Neo-Baroque style with Portland stone, the Council House and its 200-foot dome (home to the deep-toned bell 'Little John') dominate Nottingham's skyline above Old Market Square, the largest such square in England. The square itself is the city's beating heart, hosting markets, festivals, a winter ice rink and big-screen events throughout the year. It's free to admire and photograph, ideal for visitors orienting themselves, and the building's interior occasionally opens for tours and events.
