BeestonAttenborough Nature Reserve
A 220-hectare network of former gravel pits turned wetland reserve famous for kingfishers, bitterns and waterbirds, with a cafe and nature centre on an island.
Opened by Sir David Attenborough in 1966, this Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust reserve sits beside the River Trent and is one of the region's best birdwatching spots, with flat, accessible trails (the Kingfisher, Skylark and Tufted Duck routes) circling lakes and reedbeds. The eco-friendly Nature Centre on its own island has a cafe with water views, family activities and viewing windows. Reserve access is free; the car park is pay-and-display (free for the first 30 minutes). It suits families, walkers, photographers and serious birders alike, and is reachable by train to Attenborough station.
