Sherwood Forest is a National Nature Reserve managed by the RSPB, famous worldwide as the home of Robin Hood and for its extraordinary collection of ancient oaks. The headline sight is the Major Oak, a vast tree thought to be over 800 years old, reached by an easy 15-minute woodland walk from the visitor centre. Families can follow waymarked trails through ancient woodland, enjoy a children's play area and den-building zone, and meet costumed characters during holiday periods. Forest entry is free (parking charged), and the modern visitor centre has a cafe, shop and family activities; it's a classic day out for visitors, families and nature lovers, around 45 minutes north of the city.
