Newstead Abbey
A romantic 12th-century priory turned country house, famous as the ancestral home of the poet Lord Byron, surrounded by lakes and gardens.
Founded as an Augustinian priory in the late 1100s and later converted into a grand house, Newstead Abbey is best known as the home of Romantic poet Lord Byron, who lived here from 1808 to 1814; his bed, pistol and writing desk are among the treasures on show. The vast gardens, lakes and parkland are open year-round, while the house opens at selected times, so it suits literature fans, garden lovers and anyone after an atmospheric escape about 12 miles north of the city on the A60. Check opening days before travelling, as the house has limited hours.
