Southwell Minster
A magnificent Norman and Gothic cathedral, the mother church of Nottinghamshire, famed for its carved 'Leaves of Southwell'.
For over 1,000 years Southwell Minster has welcomed visitors and pilgrims; most of the building dates from 1108-1150 in the Romanesque style, with a celebrated 13th-century chapter house renowned for the exquisitely carved foliage known as the 'Leaves of Southwell'. The cathedral and surrounding historic town make a lovely half-day trip about 14 miles north-east of Nottingham, with general entry free (donations welcomed). It suits history and architecture lovers, walkers and those after a peaceful destination beyond the city.
