Wollaton Hall, Gardens & Deer Park
A 500-acre historic deer park surrounding an Elizabethan mansion, home to wild herds of red and fallow deer just three miles from the city centre.
Wollaton Park wraps a Grade I-listed Elizabethan hall (which doubled as Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises) in 500 acres of grassland, woodland, a 25-acre lake, formal gardens and the restored Camellia House. The big draw is the free-roaming herds of red and fallow deer, which have lived here since the fourteenth century and can usually be spotted up close on a walk around the grounds. Its lake, woodland and rolling grassland make it one of Nottingham's best spots for running (including the popular Wollaton Hall parkrun), cycling, walking and picnics, with a cafe and adventure playground on site. Entry to the park is free (parking is charged), making it a brilliant low-cost day out for families, dog walkers, runners and anyone wanting nature with a side of history. The Natural History Museum inside the hall is also free to enter.
